           ‘Notdifficultforme,Ithink,Clennam,’returnedhispartner.‘Iseehimbringingpresentanxiety,and,Ifear,futuresorrow,intomyoldfriend’shouse.Iseehimwearingdeeperlinesintomyoldfriend’sface,thenearerhedrawsto,andtheoftenerhelooksat,thefaceofhisdaughter.Inshort,Iseehimwithanetabouttheprettyandaffectionatecreaturewhomhewillnevermakehappy.’

           ‘Well,well!’saidClennam,‘wemustbehopeful,andwemustatleasttrytobe,ifnotgenerous(which,inthiscase,wehavenoopportunityofbeing),just.Wewillnotdisparagethisgentleman,becauseheissuccessfulinhisaddressestothebeautifulobjectofhisambition;andwewillnotquestionhernaturalrighttobestowherloveononewhomshefindsworthyofit.’
