           ‘Andhowdidyougeton,youfour?’askedClennamgaily.

           ‘Therewerefiveofus,’returnedhispartner.‘TherewasWhat’s-his-name.Hewasthere.’

           ‘Whoishe?’saidClennam.

           ‘MrHenryGowan.’

           ‘Ah,tobesure!’criedClennamwithunusualvivacity,‘Yes!—Iforgothim.’

           ‘AsImentioned,youmayremember,’saidDanielDoyce,‘heisalwaysthereonSunday.’

           ‘Yes,yes,’returnedClennam;‘Iremembernow.’

           DanielDoyce,stillwipinghisforehead,ploddinglyrepeated.‘Yes.Hewasthere,hewasthere.Ohyes,hewasthere.Andhisdog.Hewastheretoo.’

           ‘MissMeaglesisquiteattachedto—the—dog,’observedClennam.

           ‘Quiteso,’assentedhispartner.‘MoreattachedtothedogthanIamtotheman.’
