           OnthisSundayevening,heaccompaniedhisbrothertothegatewithanairofenduranceandclemency;beinginablandtemperandgraciouslydisposedtooverlookthetears.IntheflaringgaslightoftheLodge,severalCollegianswerebasking;sometakingleaveofvisitors,andsomewhohadnovisitors,watchingthefrequentturningofthekey,andconversingwithoneanotherandwithMrChivery.Thepaternalentrancemadeasensationofcourse;andMrChivery,touchinghishat(inashortmannerthough)withhiskey,hopedhefoundhimselftolerable.

           ‘Thankyou,Chivery,quitewell.Andyou?’
