           Allthenaturalcharmofthepreviousdaywasgone.Theeatersofthedinner,likethedinneritself,werelukewarm,insipid,overdone—andallowingtothispoorlittledullYoungBarnacle.Conversationlessatanytime,hewasnowthevictimofaweaknessspecialtotheoccasion,andsolelyreferabletoClennam.Hewasunderapressingandcontinualnecessityoflookingatthatgentleman,whichoccasionedhiseye-glasstogetintohissoup,intohiswine-glass,intoMrsMeagles’splate,tohangdownhisbacklikeabell-rope,andbeseveraltimesdisgracefullyrestoredtohisbosombyoneofthedingymen.Weakenedinmindbyhisfrequentlossesofthisinstrument,anditsdeterminationnottostickinhiseye,andmoreandmoreenfeebledinintellecteverytimehelookedatthemysteriousClennam,heappliedspoonstohiseyes,forks,andotherforeignmattersconnectedwiththefurnitureofthedinner-table.
