Itscarcelyseemed,however,toaffordMrMeaglesasmuchsatisfactionastheBarnaclegenealogyhaddone.ThecloudthatClennamhadneverseenuponhisfacebeforethatmorning,frequentlyovercastitagain;andtherewasthesameshadowofuneasyobservationofhimonthecomelyfaceofhiswife.MorethanonceortwicewhenPetcaressedthedog,itappearedtoClennamthatherfatherwasunhappyinseeingherdoit;and,inoneparticularinstancewhenGowanstoodontheothersideofthedog,andbenthisheadatthesametime,ArthurfanciedthathesawtearsrisetoMrMeagles’seyesashehurriedoutoftheroom.Itwaseitherthefacttoo,orhefanciedfurther,thatPetherselfwasnotinsensibletotheselittleincidents;thatshetried,withamoredelicateaffectionthanusual,toexpresstohergoodfatherhowmuchshelovedhim;thatitwasonthisaccountthatshefellbehindtherest,bothastheywenttochurchandastheyreturnedfromit,andtookhisarm.Hecouldnothaveswornbutthatashewalkedaloneinthegardenafterwards,hehadaninstantaneousglimpseofherinherfather’sroom,clingingtobothherparentswiththegreatesttenderness,andweepingonherfather’sshoulder.
Thelatterpartofthedayturningoutwet,theywerefaintokeepthehouse,lookoverMrMeagles’scollection,andbeguilethetimewithconversation.
