           ‘Comethen,madame!Speak,then!Ouroldintriguersaidthatyouwerenot—andyoustoppedhim.Hewasgoingtosaythatyouwerenot—what?Iknowalready,butIwantalittleconfidencefromyou.How,then?Youarenotwhat?’

           Shetriedagaintorepressherself,butbrokeoutvehemently,‘NotArthur’smother!’

           ‘Good,’saidRigaud.‘Youareamenable.’
