           Whenthatwasdone,amoment’swhisperdespatchedMaggytodespatchsomebodyelsetofillthebasketagain;whichsooncamebackreplenishedwithnewstores,fromwhichapresentprovisionofcoolingdrinkandjelly,andaprospectivesupplyofroastchickenandwineandwater,werethefirstextracts.Thesevariousarrangementscompleted,shetookoutheroldneedle-casetomakehimacurtainforhiswindow;andthus,withaquietreigningintheroom,thatseemedtodiffuseitselfthroughtheelsenoisyprison,hefoundhimselfcomposedinhischair,withLittleDorritworkingathisside.

           Toseethemodestheadagainbentdownoveritstask,andthenimblefingersbusyattheiroldwork—thoughshewasnotsoabsorbedinit,butthathercompassionateeyeswereoftenraisedtohisface,and,whentheydroopedagainhadtearsinthem—tobesoconsoledandcomforted,andtobelievethatallthedevotionofthisgreatnaturewasturnedtohiminhisadversitytopouroutitsinexhaustiblewealthofgoodnessuponhim,didnotsteadyClennam’stremblingvoiceorhand,orstrengthenhiminhisweakness.Yetitinspiredhimwithaninwardfortitude,thatrosewithhislove.Andhowdearlyhelovedhernow,whatwordscantell!

           Astheysatsidebysideintheshadowofthewall,theshadowfelllikelightuponhim.Shewouldnotlethimspeakmuch,andhelaybackinhischair,lookingather.Nowandagainshewouldriseandgivehimtheglassthathemightdrink,orwouldsmooththeresting-placeofhishead;thenshewouldgentlyresumeherseatbyhim,andbendoverherworkagain.
