           Toenablethisgirltoearnherfewweeklyshillings,itwasnecessaryfortheChildoftheMarshalseatogothroughanelaborateformwiththeFather.

           ‘Fannyisnotgoingtolivewithusjustnow,father.Shewillbehereagooddealintheday,butsheisgoingtoliveoutsidewithuncle.’

           ‘Ithinkunclewantsacompanion,father.Heshouldbeattendedto,andlookedafter.’

           ‘Acompanion?Hepassesmuchofhistimehere.Andyouattendtohimandlookafterhim,Amy,agreatdealmorethaneveryoursisterwill.Youallgooutsomuch;youallgooutsomuch.’

           ThiswastokeepuptheceremonyandpretenceofhishavingnoideathatAmyherselfwentoutbythedaytowork.
