           ButhewasmasteratMansfieldPark.Whenhehadreallyresolvedonanymeasure,hecouldalwayscarryitthrough;andnowbydintoflongtalkingonthesubject,explaininganddwellingonthedutyofFanny’ssometimesseeingherfamily,hedidinducehiswifetolethergo;obtainingitratherfromsubmission,however,thanconviction,forLadyBertramwasconvincedofverylittlemorethanthatSirThomasthoughtFannyoughttogo,andthereforethatshemust.Inthecalmnessofherowndressing-room,intheimpartialflowofherownmeditations,unbiassedbyhisbewilderingstatements,shecouldnotacknowledgeanynecessityforFanny’severgoingnearafatherandmotherwhohaddonewithouthersolong,whileshewassousefultoherself.Andastothenotmissingher,whichunderMrs.Norris’sdiscussionwasthepointattemptedtobeproved,shesetherselfverysteadilyagainstadmittinganysuchthing.

           SirThomashadappealedtoherreason,conscience,anddignity.Hecalleditasacrifice,anddemandeditofhergoodnessandself-commandassuch.ButMrs.NorriswantedtopersuadeherthatFannycouldbeverywellspared—shebeingreadytogiveupallherowntimetoherasrequested—and,inshort,couldnotreallybewantedormissed.
