           FannyhadbynomeansforgottenMr.Crawfordwhensheawokethenextmorning;butsherememberedthepurportofhernote,andwasnotlesssanguineastoitseffectthanshehadbeenthenightbefore.IfMr.Crawfordwouldbutgoaway!Thatwaswhatshemostearnestlydesired:goandtakehissisterwithhim,ashewastodo,andashereturnedtoMansfieldonpurposetodo.Andwhyitwasnotdonealreadyshecouldnotdevise,forMissCrawfordcertainlywantednodelay.Fannyhadhoped,inthecourseofhisyesterday’svisit,tohearthedaynamed;buthehadonlyspokenoftheirjourneyaswhatwouldtakeplaceerelong.

           Havingsosatisfactorilysettledtheconvictionhernotewouldconvey,shecouldnotbutbeastonishedtoseeMr.Crawford,assheaccidentallydid,cominguptothehouseagain,andatanhourasearlyasthedaybefore.Hiscomingmighthavenothingtodowithher,butshemustavoidseeinghimifpossible;andbeingthenonherwayupstairs,sheresolvedtheretoremain,duringthewholeofhisvisit,unlessactuallysentfor;andasMrs.Norriswasstillinthehouse,thereseemedlittledangerofherbeingwanted.

           Shesatsometimeinagooddealofagitation,listening,trembling,andfearingtobesentforeverymoment;butasnofootstepsapproachedtheEastroom,shegrewgraduallycomposed,couldsitdown,andbeabletoemployherself,andabletohopethatMr.Crawfordhadcomeandwouldgowithoutherbeingobligedtoknowanythingofthematter.
