Aday,andaveryearlyday,wasactuallyfixedfortheCrawfords’departure;andSirThomasthoughtitmightbeaswelltomakeonemoreeffortfortheyoungmanbeforeheleftMansfield,thatallhisprofessionsandvowsofunshakenattachmentmighthaveasmuchhopetosustainthemaspossible.

Edmundwasnotunwillingtobepersuadedtoengageinthebusiness;hewantedtoknowFanny’sfeelings.Shehadbeenusedtoconsulthimineverydifficulty,andhelovedhertoowelltobeartobedeniedherconfidencenow;hehopedtobeofservicetoher,hethoughthemustbeofservicetoher;whomelsehadshetoopenherheartto?Ifshedidnotneedcounsel,shemustneedthecomfortofcommunication.Fannyestrangedfromhim,silentandreserved,wasanunnaturalstateofthings;astatewhichhemustbreakthrough,andwhichhecouldeasilylearntothinkshewaswantinghimtobreakthrough.
