           TheHonourableJohnYates,thisnewfriend,hadnotmuchtorecommendhimbeyondhabitsoffashionandexpense,andbeingtheyoungersonofalordwithatolerableindependence;andSirThomaswouldprobablyhavethoughthisintroductionatMansfieldbynomeansdesirable.Mr.Bertram’sacquaintancewithhimhadbegunatWeymouth,wheretheyhadspenttendaystogetherinthesamesociety,andthefriendship,iffriendshipitmightbecalled,hadbeenprovedandperfectedbyMr.Yates’sbeinginvitedtotakeMansfieldinhisway,wheneverhecould,andbyhispromisingtocome;andhedidcomeratherearlierthanhadbeenexpected,inconsequenceofthesuddenbreaking-upofalargepartyassembledforgaietyatthehouseofanotherfriend,whichhehadleftWeymouthtojoin.Hecameonthewingsofdisappointment,andwithhisheadfullofacting,forithadbeenatheatricalparty;andtheplayinwhichhehadborneapartwaswithintwodaysofrepresentation,whenthesuddendeathofoneofthenearestconnexionsofthefamilyhaddestroyedtheschemeanddispersedtheperformers.Tobesonearhappiness,sonearfame,sonearthelongparagraphinpraiseoftheprivatetheatricalsatEcclesford,theseatoftheRightHon.LordRavenshaw,inCornwall,whichwouldofcoursehaveimmortalisedthewholepartyforatleastatwelvemonth!andbeingsonear,toloseitall,wasaninjurytobekeenlyfelt,andMr.Yatescouldtalkofnothingelse.Ecclesfordanditstheatre,withitsarrangementsanddresses,rehearsalsandjokes,washisnever-failingsubject,andtoboastofthepasthisonlyconsolation.
