           Edmund’sfirstobjectthenextmorningwastoseehisfatheralone,andgivehimafairstatementofthewholeactingscheme,defendinghisownshareinitasfaronlyashecouldthen,inasoberermoment,feelhismotivestodeserve,andacknowledging,withperfectingenuousness,thathisconcessionhadbeenattendedwithsuchpartialgoodastomakehisjudgmentinitverydoubtful.Hewasanxious,whilevindicatinghimself,tosaynothingunkindoftheothers:buttherewasonlyoneamongstthemwhoseconducthecouldmentionwithoutsomenecessityofdefenceorpalliation.“Wehaveallbeenmoreorlesstoblame,”saidhe,“everyoneofus,exceptingFanny.Fannyistheonlyonewhohasjudgedrightlythroughout;whohasbeenconsistent.Herfeelingshavebeensteadilyagainstitfromfirsttolast.Sheneverceasedtothinkofwhatwasduetoyou.YouwillfindFannyeverythingyoucouldwish.”

           SirThomassawalltheimproprietyofsuchaschemeamongsuchaparty,andatsuchatime,asstronglyashissonhadeversupposedhemust;hefeltittoomuch,indeed,formanywords;andhavingshakenhandswithEdmund,meanttotrytolosethedisagreeableimpression,andforgethowmuchhehadbeenforgottenhimselfassoonashecould,afterthehousehadbeenclearedofeveryobjectenforcingtheremembrance,andrestoredtoitsproperstate.Hedidnotenterintoanyremonstrancewithhisotherchildren:hewasmorewillingtobelievetheyfelttheirerrorthantoruntheriskofinvestigation.Thereproofofanimmediateconclusionofeverything,thesweepofeverypreparation,wouldbesufficient.
