           Theballwasover,andthebreakfastwassoonovertoo;thelastkisswasgiven,andWilliamwasgone.Mr.Crawfordhad,asheforetold,beenverypunctual,andshortandpleasanthadbeenthemeal.

           AfterseeingWilliamtothelastmoment,Fannywalkedbacktothebreakfast-roomwithaverysaddenedhearttogrieveoverthemelancholychange;andthereherunclekindlylefthertocryinpeace,conceiving,perhaps,thatthedesertedchairofeachyoungmanmightexercisehertenderenthusiasm,andthattheremainingcoldporkbonesandmustardinWilliam’splatemightbutdivideherfeelingswiththebrokenegg-shellsinMr.Crawford’s.Shesatandcriedconamoreasheruncleintended,butitwasconamorefraternalandnoother.Williamwasgone,andshenowfeltasifshehadwastedhalfhisvisitinidlecaresandselfishsolicitudesunconnectedwithhim.

           Fanny’sdispositionwassuchthatshecouldnevereventhinkofherauntNorrisinthemeagrenessandcheerlessnessofherownsmallhouse,withoutreproachingherselfforsomelittlewantofattentiontoherwhentheyhadbeenlasttogether;muchlesscouldherfeelingsacquitherofhavingdoneandsaidandthoughteverythingbyWilliamthatwasduetohimforawholefortnight.

           Itwasaheavy,melancholyday.Soonafterthesecondbreakfast,Edmundbadethemgood-byeforaweek,andmountedhishorseforPeterborough,andthenallweregone.Nothingremainedoflastnightbutremembrances,whichshehadnobodytosharein.
