           ThefirsteventofanyimportanceinthefamilywasthedeathofMr.Norris,whichhappenedwhenFannywasaboutfifteen,andnecessarilyintroducedalterationsandnovelties.Mrs.Norris,onquittingtheParsonage,removedfirsttothePark,andafterwardstoasmallhouseofSirThomas’sinthevillage,andconsoledherselfforthelossofherhusbandbyconsideringthatshecoulddoverywellwithouthim;andforherreductionofincomebytheevidentnecessityofstrictereconomy.

           ThelivingwashereafterforEdmund;and,hadhisunclediedafewyearssooner,itwouldhavebeendulygiventosomefriendtoholdtillhewereoldenoughfororders.ButTom’sextravagancehad,previoustothatevent,beensogreatastorenderadifferentdisposalofthenextpresentationnecessary,andtheyoungerbrothermusthelptopayforthepleasuresoftheelder.TherewasanotherfamilylivingactuallyheldforEdmund;butthoughthiscircumstancehadmadethearrangementsomewhateasiertoSirThomas’sconscience,hecouldnotbutfeelittobeanactofinjustice,andheearnestlytriedtoimpresshiseldestsonwiththesameconviction,inthehopeofitsproducingabettereffectthananythinghehadyetbeenabletosayordo.
