Thatis,ifDesmashadtheleastinterestinaprisonerheneedscarcelysaysomuchtoBonhag;hemightmerelysuggestthatthismanwasusedtoadifferentkindoflife,orthat,becauseofsomepastexperience,itmightgohardwithhimifbewerehandledroughly;andBonhagwouldstrainhimselftobepleasant.Thetroublewasthattoashrewdmanofanyrefinementhisattentionswereobjectionable,beingobviouslyofferedforapurpose,andtoapoororignorantmantheywerebrutalandcontemptuous.Hehadbuiltupanextraincomeforhimselfinsidetheprisonbysellingtheprisonersextraallowancesofthingswhichhesecretlybroughtintotheprison.Itwasstrictlyagainsttherules,intheoryatleast,tobringinanythingwhichwasnotsoldinthestore-room—tobacco,writingpaper,pens,ink,whisky,cigars,ordelicaciesofanykind.Ontheotherhand,andexcellentlywellforhim,itwastruethattobaccoofaninferiorgradewasprovided,aswellaswretchedpens,inkandpaper,sothatnoself-respectingman,ifhecouldhelpit,wouldendurethem.Whiskywasnotallowedatall,anddelicacieswereabhorredasindicatingrankfavoritism;nevertheless,theywerebroughtin.IfaprisonerhadthemoneyandwaswillingtoseethatBonhagsecuredsomethingforhistrouble,almostanythingwouldbeforthcoming.Alsotheprivilegeofbeingsentintothegeneralyardasa"trusty,"orbeingallowedtostayinthelittleprivateyardwhichsomecellspossessed,longerthanthehalf-hourordinarilypermitted,wassold.
