Idonotwishtocastanyreflectionontheintegrityofthecourt,norofanycourt,norofanyoftheprocessesoflaw.ButIdocondemnanddeploretheuntowardchainofeventswhichhasbuiltupaseemingsituation,noteasilyunderstoodbythelaymind,andwhichhasbroughtmydistinguishedclientwithinthepurviewofthelaw.Ithinkitisbutfairthatthisshouldbefinallyandpubliclystatedhereandnow.Iaskthatyourhonorbelenient,andthatifyoucannotconscientiouslydismissthischargeyouwillatleastseethatthefacts,asIhaveindicatedthem,aregivendueweightinthemeasureofthepunishmentinflicted."
StegersteppedbackandJudgePaydersonnodded,asmuchastosayhehadheardallthedistinguishedlawyerhadtosay,andwouldgiveitsuchconsiderationasitdeserved—nomore.ThenheturnedtoCowperwood,and,summoningallhisjudicialdignitytohisaid,hebegan:
