Whilehewasnotablycomfortedbythedissentingopinionsofthejudgesinminority,andwhilehehadbeenschoolinghimselftoexpecttheworstinthisconnectionandhadbeenarranginghisaffairsaswellashecouldinanticipationofit,Cowperwoodwasstillbitterlydisappointed.Itwouldbeuntruetosaythat,strongandself-reliantashenormallywas,hedidnotsuffer.Hewasnotwithoutsensibilitiesofthehighestorder,onlytheyweregovernedandcontrolledinhimbythatcoldironthing,hisreason,whichneverforsookhim.TherewasnofurtherappealpossiblesavetotheUnitedStatesSupremeCourt,asStegerpointedout,andthereonlyontheconstitutionalityofsomephaseofthedecisionandhisrightsasacitizen,ofwhichtheSupremeCourtoftheUnitedStatesmusttakecognizance.Thiswasatediousandexpensivethingtodo.Itwasnotexactlyobviousatthemomentonwhatpointhecouldmakeanappeal.Itwouldinvolvealongdelay—perhapsayearandahalf,perhapslonger,attheendofwhichperiodhemighthavetoservehisprisontermanyhow,andpendingwhichhewouldcertainlyhavetoundergoincarcerationforatime.
