           Thelobsterwouldleaplikeacatapulttowherethesquidwasapparentlyidlydreaming,andthesquid,veryalert,woulddartaway,shootingoutatthesametimeacloudofink,behindwhichitwoulddisappear.Itwasnotalwayscompletelysuccessful,however.Smallportionsofitsbodyoritstailwerefrequentlyleftintheclawsofthemonsterbelow.Fascinatedbythedrama,youngCowperwoodcamedailytowatch.

           Theboystayedaslongashecould,thebitterstrugglefascinatinghim.Now,maybe,orinanhouroraday,thesquidmightdie,slainbythelobster,andthelobsterwouldeathim.Helookedagainatthegreenish-copperishengineofdestructioninthecornerandwonderedwhenthiswouldbe.To-night,maybe.Hewouldcomebackto-night.

           Hereturnedthatnight,andlo!theexpectedhadhappened.Therewasalittlecrowdaroundthetank.Thelobsterwasinthecorner.Beforehimwasthesquidcutintwoandpartiallydevoured.
