AileenButler,duringallthistime,wasfollowingthetrendofCowperwood’soutwardvicissitudesasheraldedbythenewspapersandthelocalgossipwithasmuchinterestandbiasandenthusiasmforhimasherpowerfulphysicalandaffectionalnaturewouldpermit.Shewasnogreatreasonerwhereaffectionenteredin,butshrewdenoughwithoutit;and,althoughshesawhimoftenandhetoldhermuch—asmuchashisnaturalcautionwouldpermit—sheyetgatheredfromthenewspapersandprivateconversation,atherownfamily’stableandelsewhere,that,asbadastheysaidhewas,hewasnotasbadashemightbe.Oneitemonly,clippedfromthePhiladelphiaPublicLedgersoonafterCowperwoodhadbeenpubliclyaccusedofembezzlement,comfortedandconsoledher.Shecutitoutandcarrieditinherbosom;for,somehow,itseemedtoshowthatheradoredFrankwasfarmoresinnedagainstthansinning.ItwasapartofoneofthoseverynumerouspronunciamientosorreportsissuedbytheCitizens’MunicipalReformAssociation,anditran:
