Intheentresolofthishousewasoneofhisfinesttreasures—acarvedandfloriatedbasebearingataperingmonolithsomefourfeethigh,crownedbytheheadofapeculiarlygoatishPan,bythesideofwhichweretheproblematicremainsofalovelynudenymph—justthelittlefeetbrokenoffattheankles.Thebaseonwhichthefeetofthenymphandthemonolithstoodwasornamentedwithcarvedox-skullsintertwinedwithroses.InhisreceptionhallwerereplicasofCaligula,Nero,andotherRomanemperors;andonhisstair-wallsreliefsofdancingnymphsinprocession,andpriestsbearingofferingsofsheepandswinetothesacrificialaltars.Therewasaclockinsomecornerofthehousewhichchimedthequarter,thehalf,thethree-quarters,andthehourinstrange,euphonious,andpatheticnotes.OnthewallsoftheroomsweretapestriesofFlemishorigin,andinthereception-hall,thelibrary,theliving-room,andthedrawing-room,richlycarvedfurnitureafterthestandardsoftheItalianRenaissance.TheSenator’stasteinthematterofpaintingswasinadequate,andhemistrustedit;butsuchashehadwereofdistinguishedoriginandauthentic.Hecaredmoreforhiscurio-casesfilledwithsmallerimportedbronzes,Venetianglass,andChinesejade.Hewasnotacollectoroftheseinanynotablesense—merelyaloverofafewchoiceexamples.Handsometigerandleopardskinrugs,thefurofamusk-oxforhisdivan,andtannedandbrown-stainedgoatandkidskinsforhistables,gaveasenseofeleganceandreservedprofusion.
