           True,oflateButlerhadnoticedthatshedidnotcaresomuchaboutgoingtochurch,wouldsometimesmakeexcusesandstayathomeonSundays;butshehadgone,asarule.Andnow,nowhisthoughtswouldcometotheendofablindalley,andthenhewouldstartback,asitwere,mentally,tothecenterofthings,andbeginalloveragain.

           Hewentupthestairstohisownofficeslowly.Hewentinandsatdown,andthoughtandthought.Teno’clockcame,andeleven.Hissonbotheredhimwithanoccasionalmatterofinterest,but,findinghimmoody,finallyabandonedhimtohisownspeculations.Itwastwelve,andthenone,andhewasstillsittingtherethinking,whenthepresenceofCowperwoodwasannounced.

           Cowperwood,onfindingButlernotathome,andnotencounteringAileen,hadhurrieduptotheofficeoftheEdwardButlerContractingCompany,whichwasalsothecenterofsomeofButler’sstreet-railwayinterests.Thefloorspacecontrolledbythecompanywasdividedintotheusualofficialcompartments,withsectionsforthebookkeepers,theroad-managers,thetreasurer,andsoon.OwenButler,andhisfatherhadsmallbutattractivelyfurnishedofficesintherear,wheretheytransactedalltheimportantbusinessofthecompany.

           Duringthisdrive,curiously,byreasonofoneofthosestrangepsychologicintuitionswhichsooftenprecedeahumandifficultyofonesortoranother,hehadbeenthinkingofAileen.
