HewassurethatAndrewJacksonwasallwronginhisoppositiontoNicholasBiddleandtheUnitedStatesBank,oneofthegreatissuesoftheday;andhewasworried,ashemightwellbe,bytheperfectstormofwildcatmoneywhichwasfloatingaboutandwhichwasconstantlycomingtohisbank—discounted,ofcourse,andhandedoutagaintoanxiousborrowersataprofit.HisbankwastheThirdNationalofPhiladelphia,locatedinthatcenterofallPhiladelphiaandindeed,atthattime,ofpracticallyallnationalfinance—ThirdStreet—anditsownersconductedabrokeragebusinessasasideline.TherewasaperfectplagueofStatebanks,greatandsmall,inthosedays,issuingnotespracticallywithoutregulationuponinsecureandunknownassetsandfailingandsuspendingwithastonishingrapidity;andaknowledgeofallthesewasanimportantrequirementofMr.Cowperwood’sposition.Asaresult,hehadbecomethesoulofcaution.Unfortunately,forhim,helackedinagreatmeasurethetwothingsthatarenecessaryfordistinctioninanyfield—magnetismandvision.Hewasnotdestinedtobeagreatfinancier,thoughhewasmarkedouttobeamoderatelysuccessfulone.
