           Itwasnothisideathathecouldgetrichbysaving.Fromthefirsthehadthenotionthatliberalspendingwasbetter,andthatsomehowhewouldgetalong.

           Itwasinthisyear,oralittleearlier,thathebegantotakeaninterestingirls.Hehadfromthefirstakeeneyeforthebeautifulamongthem;and,beinggood-lookingandmagnetichimself,itwasnotdifficultforhimtoattractthesympatheticinterestofthoseinwhomhewasinterested.Atwelve-yearoldgirl,PatienceBarlow,wholivedfurtherupthestreet,wasthefirsttoattracthisattentionorbeattractedbyhim.Blackhairandsnappingblackeyeswereherportion,withprettypigtailsdownherback,anddaintyfeetandanklestomatchadaintyfigure.ShewasaQuakeress,thedaughterofQuakerparents,wearingademurelittlebonnet.Herdisposition,however,wasvivacious,andshelikedthisself-reliant,self-sufficient,straight-spokenboy.Oneday,afteranexchangeofglancesfromtimetotime,hesaid,withasmileandthecouragethatwasinnateinhim:"Youliveupmyway,don’tyou?"

           "Yes,"shereplied,alittleflusteredthislastmanifestedinanervousswingingofherschool-bag—"Iliveatnumberone-forty-one."

           "Iknowthehouse,"hesaid."I’veseenyougointhere.Yougotothesameschoolmysisterdoes,don’tyou?Aren’tyouPatienceBarlow?"Hehadheardsomeoftheboysspeakhername."Yes.Howdoyouknow?"

           "Oh,I’veheard,"hesmiled."I’veseenyou.
