Ascandalinconnectionwiththecitytreasurywouldbeaverybadthing.ItwouldendStener’scareerasanofficial—wouldverylikelysendhimtothepenitentiary.ItmightwrecktheRepublicanparty’schancestowin.Itwouldcertainlyinvolvehimselfashavingmuchtodowithit.Ifthathappened,hewouldhavethepoliticianstoreckonwith.For,ifhewerehardpressed,ashewouldbe,andfailed,thefactthathehadbeentryingtoinvadethecitystreet-railwaypreserveswhichtheyheldsacredtothemselves,withborrowedcitymoney,andthatthisborrowingwasliabletocostthemthecityelection,wouldallcomeout.Theywouldnotviewallthatwithakindlyeye.Itwouldbeuselesstosay,ashecould,thathehadborrowedthemoneyattwopercent.(mostofit,tosavehimself,hadbeencoveredbyaprotectiveclauseofthatkind),orthathehadmerelyactedasanagentforStener.Thatmightgodownwiththeunsophisticatedoftheouterworld,butitwouldneverbeswallowedbythepoliticians.Theyknewbetterthanthat.
Therewasanotherphasetothissituation,however,thatencouragedhim,andthatwashisknowledgeofhowcitypoliticsweregoingingeneral.Itwasuselessforanypolitician,howeverloftly,totakeahighandmightytoneinacrisislikethis.Allofthem,greatandsmall,wereprofitinginonewayandanotherthroughcityprivileges.
