Inconnectionwiththisfirstconsolidation,hisplanwastospreadrumorsofthecomingconsolidationofthetwolines,toappealtothelegislatureforprivilegesofextension,togetupanarrestingprospectusandlaterannualreports,andtoboomthestockonthestockexchangeasmuchashisswellingresourceswouldpermit.Thetroubleisthatwhenyouaretryingtomakeamarketforastock—tounloadalargeissuesuchashiswas(overfivehundredthousanddollars’worth)—whileretainingfivehundredthousandforyourself,itrequireslargecapitaltohandleit.Theownerinthesecasesiscompellednotonlytogoonthemarketanddomuchfictitiousbuying,thuscreatingafictitiousdemand,butoncethisfictitiousdemandhasdeceivedthepublicandhehasbeenabletounloadaconsiderablequantityofhiswares,heis,unlessheridshimselfofallhisstock,compelledtostandbehindit.If,forinstance,hesoldfivethousandshares,aswasdoneinthisinstance,andretainedfivethousand,hemustseethatthepublicpriceoftheoutstandingfivethousandsharesdidnotfallbelowacertainpoint,becausethevalueofhisprivateshareswouldfallwithit.Andif,asisalmostalwaysthecase,theprivateshareshadbeenhypothecatedwithbanksandtrustcompaniesformoneywherewithtoconductotherenterprises,thefallingoftheirvalueintheopenmarketmerelymeantthatthebankswouldcallforlargemarginstoprotecttheirloansorcalltheirloansentirely.Thismeantthathisworkwasafailure,andhemightreadilyfail.
