           Hehadnoparticularquarrelwiththetheorythattheyshouldbefree;hesawnoparticularreasonwhytheSouthshouldnotprotestvigorouslyagainstthedestructionoftheirpropertyandtheirsystem.Itwastoobadthatthenegroesasslavesshouldbeabusedinsomeinstances.Hefeltsurethatthatoughttobeadjustedinsomeway;butbeyondthathecouldnotseethattherewasanygreatethicalbasisforthecontentionsoftheirsponsors.Thevastmajorityofmenandwomen,ashecouldsee,werenotessentiallyaboveslavery,evenwhentheyhadalltheguaranteesofaconstitutionformulatedtopreventit.Therewasmentalslavery,theslaveryoftheweakmindandtheweakbody.HefollowedthecontentionsofsuchmenasSumner,Garrison,Phillips,andBeecher,withconsiderableinterest;butatnotimecouldheseethattheproblemwasavitaloneforhim.Hedidnotcaretobeasoldieroranofficerofsoldiers;hehadnogiftforpolemics;hismindwasnotofthedisputatiousordernotevenintherealmoffinance.Hewasconcernedonlytoseewhatwasofvastadvantagetohim,andtodevoteallhisattentiontothat.Thisfratricidalwarinthenationcouldnothelphim.Itreallydelayed,hethought,thetruecommercialandfinancialadjustmentofthecountry,andhehopedthatitwouldsoonend.Hewasnotofthosewhocomplainedbitterlyoftheexcessivewartaxes,thoughheknewthemtobetryingtomany.
