           Butwhathadbefallenthenight?Themoonwasnotyetset,andwewereallinshadow:Icouldscarcelyseemymaster’sface,nearasIwas. Andwhatailedthechestnuttree?itwrithedandgroaned;whilewindroaredinthelaurelwalk,andcamesweepingoverus. 

           "Wemustgoin,"saidMr.Rochester:"theweatherchanges.Icouldhavesatwiththeetillmorning,Jane." 

           "Andso,"thoughtI,"couldIwithyou." Ishouldhavesaidso,perhaps,butalivid,vividsparkleaptoutofacloudatwhichIwaslooking,andtherewasacrack,acrash,andacloserattlingpeal;andIthoughtonlyofhidingmydazzledeyesagainstMr.Rochester’sshoulder. 

           Therainrusheddown.Hehurriedmeupthewalk,throughthegrounds,andintothehouse;butwewerequitewetbeforewecouldpassthethreshold.
