           Itisoneofmyfaults,thatthoughmytongueissometimespromptenoughatananswer,therearetimeswhenitsadlyfailsmeinframinganexcuse;andalwaysthelapseoccursatsomecrisis,whenafacilewordorplausiblepretextisspeciallywantedtogetmeoutofpainfulembarrassment. IdidnotliketowalkatthishouralonewithMr.Rochesterintheshadowyorchard;butIcouldnotfindareasontoallegeforleavinghim. Ifollowedwithlaggingstep,andthoughtsbusilybentondiscoveringameansofextrication;buthehimselflookedsocomposedandsogravealso,Ibecameashamedoffeelinganyconfusion:theevilifevilexistentorprospectivetherewasseemedtoliewithmeonly;hismindwasunconsciousandquiet. 

           "Jane,"herecommenced,asweenteredthelaurelwalk,andslowlystrayeddowninthedirectionofthesunkfenceandthehorse-chestnut,"Thornfieldisapleasantplaceinsummer,isitnot?" 

           "Yes,sir." 

           "Youmusthavebecomeinsomedegreeattachedtothehouse,you,whohaveaneyefornaturalbeauties,andagooddealoftheorganofAdhesiveness?" 

           "Iamattachedtoit,indeed."
