SheturnedasIdrewnear,andlookedatmehaughtily:hereyesseemedtodemand,"Whatcanthecreepingcreaturewantnow?"andwhenIsaid,inalowvoice,"Mr.Rochester,"shemadeamovementasiftemptedtoordermeaway. Irememberherappearanceatthemoment—itwasverygracefulandverystriking:sheworeamorningrobeofsky-bluecrape;agauzyazurescarfwastwistedinherhair. Shehadbeenallanimationwiththegame,andirritatedpridedidnotlowertheexpressionofherhaughtylineaments.
"Doesthatpersonwantyou?"sheinquiredofMr.Rochester;andMr.Rochesterturnedtoseewhothe"person"was. Hemadeacuriousgrimace—oneofhisstrangeandequivocaldemonstrations—threwdownhiscueandfollowedmefromtheroom.
"Well,Jane?"hesaid,asherestedhisbackagainsttheschoolroomdoor,whichhehadshut.
"Ifyouplease,sir,Iwantleaveofabsenceforaweekortwo."
"Whattodo?—wheretogo?"
"Toseeasickladywhohassentforme."
"Whatsicklady?—wheredoesshelive?"
"AtGateshead;in—shire."
