Tospeaktruth,Ihadnottheleastwishtogointocompany,forincompanyIwasveryrarelynoticed;andifBessiehadbutbeenkindandcompanionable,Ishouldhavedeemeditatreattospendtheeveningsquietlywithher,insteadofpassingthemundertheformidableeyeofMrs.Reed,inaroomfullofladiesandgentlemen.
