           Shepointedtoawidearchcorrespondingtothewindow,andhunglikeitwithaTyrian-dyedcurtain,nowloopedup.Mountingtoitbytwobroadsteps,andlookingthrough,IthoughtIcaughtaglimpseofafairyplace,sobrighttomynovice-eyesappearedtheviewbeyond.Yetitwasmerelyaveryprettydrawing-room,andwithinitaboudoir,bothspreadwithwhitecarpets,onwhichseemedlaidbrilliantgarlandsofflowers;bothceiledwithsnowymouldingsofwhitegrapesandvine-leaves,beneathwhichglowedinrichcontrastcrimsoncouchesandottomans;whiletheornamentsonthepaleParisianmantelpiecewereofsparklingBohemianglass,rubyred;andbetweenthewindowslargemirrorsrepeatedthegeneralblendingofsnowandfire. 

           "Inwhatorderyoukeeptheserooms,Mrs.Fairfax!"saidI."Nodust,nocanvascoverings:exceptthattheairfeelschilly,onewouldthinktheywereinhabiteddaily." 

           "Why,MissEyre,thoughMr.Rochester’svisitsherearerare,theyarealwayssuddenandunexpected;andasIobservedthatitputhimouttofindeverythingswathedup,andtohaveabustleofarrangementonhisarrival,Ithoughtitbesttokeeptheroomsinreadiness."
