           ‘Ah,sister,whydoyouturnawayyourface?’

           Nellcouldnothelpfollowingatalittledistance.Theywenttothehouseofanoldnurse,wheretheeldersisterhadengagedabed-roomforthechild.‘Ishallcometoyouearlyeverymorning,’shesaid,‘andwecanbetogetheralltheday.’

           ’Whynotatnight-timetoo?Dearsister,wouldtheybeangrywithyouforthat?’

           WhyweretheeyesoflittleNellwet,thatnight,withtearslikethoseofthetwosisters?Whydidshebearagratefulheartbecausetheyhadmet,andfeelitpaintothinkthattheywouldshortlypart?Letusnotbelievethatanyselfishreferenceunconsciousthoughitmighthavebeentoherowntrialsawokethissympathy,butthankGodthattheinnocentjoysofotherscanstronglymoveus,andthatwe,eveninourfallennature,haveonesourceofpureemotionwhichmustbeprizedinHeaven!

           Bymorning’scheerfulglow,butoftenerstillbyevening’sgentlelight,thechild,witharespectfortheshortandhappyintercourseofthesetwosisterswhichforbadehertoapproachandsayathankfulword,althoughsheyearnedtodoso,followedthematadistanceintheirwalksandrambles,stoppingwhentheystopped,sittingonthegrasswhentheysatdown,risingwhentheywenton,andfeelingitacompanionshipanddelighttobesonearthem.Theireveningwalkwasbyariver’sside.
