TheprofessionalgentlemanwhohadgivenKittheconsolatorypieceofinformationrelativetothesettlementofhistrifleofbusinessattheOldBailey,andtheprobabilityofitsbeingverysoondisposedof,turnedouttobequitecorrectinhisprognostications.Ineightdays’time,thesessionscommenced.Inonedayafterwards,theGrandJuryfoundaTrueBillagainstChristopherNubblesforfelony;andintwodaysfromthatfinding,theaforesaidChristopherNubbleswascalledupontopleadGuiltyorNotGuiltytoanIndictmentforthathethesaidChristopherdidfeloniouslyabstractandstealfromthedwelling-houseandofficeofoneSampsonBrass,gentleman,oneBankNoteforFivePoundsissuedbytheGovernorandCompanyoftheBankofEngland;incontraventionoftheStatutesinthatcasemadeandprovided,andagainstthepeaceofourSovereignLordtheKing,hiscrownanddignity.
Tothisindictment,ChristopherNubbles,inalowandtremblingvoice,pleadedNotGuilty;andhere,letthosewhoareinthehabitofforminghastyjudgmentsfromappearances,andwhowouldhavehadChristopher,ifinnocent,speakoutverystrongandloud,observe,thatconfinementandanxietywillsubduethestoutesthearts;andthattoonewhohasbeencloseshutup,thoughitbeonlyfortenorelevendays,seeingbutstonewallsandaveryfewstonyfaces,thesuddenentranceintoagreathallfilledwithlife,isaratherdisconcertingandstartlingcircumstance.
