           TheremainderofthatdayandthewholeofthenextwereabusytimefortheNubblesfamily,towhomeverythingconnectedwithKit’soutfitanddeparturewasmatterofasgreatmomentasifhehadbeenabouttopenetrateintotheinteriorofAfrica,ortotakeacruiseroundtheworld.Itwouldbedifficulttosupposethatthereeverwasaboxwhichwasopenedandshutsomanytimeswithinfour-and-twentyhours,asthatwhichcontainedhiswardrobeandnecessaries;andcertainlythereneverwasonewhichtotwosmalleyespresentedsuchamineofclothing,asthismightychestwithitsthreeshirtsandproportionateallowanceofstockingsandpocket-handkerchiefs,disclosedtotheastonishedvisionoflittleJacob.Atlastitwasconveyedtothecarrier’s,atwhosehouseatFinchleyKitwastofinditnextday;andtheboxbeinggone,thereremainedbuttwoquestionsforconsideration:firstly,whetherthecarrierwouldlose,ordishonestlyfeigntolose,theboxupontheroad;secondly,whetherKit’smotherperfectlyunderstoodhowtotakecareofherselfintheabsenceofherson.

           ‘Idon’tthinkthere’shardlyachanceofhisreallylosingit,butcarriersareundergreattemptationtopretendtheylosethings,nodoubt,’saidMrsNubblesapprehensively,inreferencetothefirstpoint.

           ‘Nodoubtaboutit,’returnedKit,withaseriouslook;‘uponmyword,mother,Idon’tthinkitwasrighttotrustittoitself.Somebodyoughttohavegonewithit,I’mafraid.’

           ‘Wecan’thelpitnow,’saidhismother;‘butitwasfoolishandwrong.Peopleoughtn’ttobetempted.
