           Whentheyhadtravelledslowlyforwardforsomeshortdistance,Nellventuredtostealalookroundthecaravanandobserveitmoreclosely.Onehalfofitthatmoietyinwhichthecomfortableproprietresswasthenseatedwascarpeted,andsopartitionedoffatthefurtherendastoaccommodateasleeping-place,constructedafterthefashionofaberthonboardship,whichwasshaded,likethelittlewindows,withfairwhitecurtains,andlookedcomfortableenough,thoughbywhatkindofgymnasticexercisetheladyofthecaravanevercontrivedtogetintoit,wasanunfathomablemystery.Theotherhalfservedforakitchen,andwasfittedupwithastovewhosesmallchimneypassedthroughtheroof.Itheldalsoaclosetorlarder,severalchests,agreatpitcherofwater,andafewcooking-utensilsandarticlesofcrockery.Theselatternecessarieshunguponthewalls,which,inthatportionoftheestablishmentdevotedtotheladyofthecaravan,wereornamentedwithsuchgayerandlighterdecorationsasatriangleandacoupleofwell-thumbedtambourines.

           Theladyofthecaravansatatonewindowinalltheprideandpoetryofthemusicalinstruments,andlittleNellandhergrandfathersatattheotherinallthehumilityofthekettleandsaucepans,whilethemachinejoggedonandshiftedthedarkeningprospectveryslowly.
