           Quietandsolitudeweredestinedtoholduninterruptedrulenolonger,beneaththeroofthatshelteredthechild.Nextmorning,theoldmanwasinaragingfeveraccompaniedwithdelirium;andsinkingundertheinfluenceofthisdisorderhelayformanyweeksinimminentperilofhislife.Therewaswatchingenough,now,butitwasthewatchingofstrangerswhomadeagreedytradeofit,andwho,intheintervalsintheirattendanceuponthesickmanhuddledtogetherwithaghastlygood-fellowship,andateanddrankandmademerry;fordiseaseanddeathweretheirordinaryhouseholdgods.

           Yet,inallthehurryandcrowdingofsuchatime,thechildwasmorealonethanshehadeverbeenbefore;aloneinspirit,aloneinherdevotiontohimwhowaswastingawayuponhisburningbed;aloneinherunfeignedsorrow,andherunpurchasedsympathy.Dayafterday,andnightafternight,foundherstillbythepillowoftheunconscioussufferer,stillanticipatinghiseverywant,stilllisteningtothoserepetitionsofhernameandthoseanxietiesandcaresforher,whichwereeveruppermostamonghisfeverishwanderings.

           Thehousewasnolongertheirs.Eventhesickchamberseemedtoberetained,ontheuncertaintenureofMrQuilp’sfavour.Theoldman’sillnesshadnotlastedmanydayswhenhetookformalpossessionofthepremisesandalluponthem,invirtueofcertainlegalpowerstothateffect,whichfewunderstoodandnonepresumedtocallinquestion.
