           Inalltheirjourneying,theyhadneverlongedsoardently,theyhadneversopinedandwearied,forthefreedomofpureairandopencountry,asnow.No,notevenonthatmemorablemorning,when,desertingtheiroldhome,theyabandonedthemselvestothemerciesofastrangeworld,andleftallthedumbandsenselessthingstheyhadknownandloved,behindnoteventhen,hadtheysoyearnedforthefreshsolitudesofwood,hillside,andfield,asnow,whenthenoiseanddirtandvapour,ofthegreatmanufacturingtownreekingwithleanmiseryandhungrywretchedness,hemmedtheminoneveryside,andseemedtoshutouthope,andrenderescapeimpossible.

           ‘Twodaysandnights!’thoughtthechild.‘Hesaidtwodaysandnightsweshouldhavetospendamongsuchscenesasthese.Oh!ifwelivetoreachthecountryonceagain,ifwegetclearofthesedreadfulplaces,thoughitisonlytoliedownanddie,withwhatagratefulheartIshallthankGodforsomuchmercy!’

           Withthoughtslikethis,andwithsomevaguedesignoftravellingtoagreatdistanceamongstreamsandmountains,whereonlyverypoorandsimplepeoplelived,andwheretheymightmaintainthemselvesbyveryhumblehelpingworkinfarms,freefromsuchterrorsasthatfromwhichtheyfledthechild,withnoresourcebutthepoorman’sgift,andnoencouragementbutthatwhichflowedfromherownheart,anditssenseofthetruthandrightofwhatshedid,nervedherselftothislastjourneyandboldlypursuedhertask.
