           WhetherMrQuilptookanysleepbysnatchesofafewwinksatatime,orwhetherhesatwithhiseyeswideopenallnightlong,certainitisthathekepthiscigaralight,andkindledeveryfreshonefromtheashesofthatwhichwasnearlyconsumed,withoutrequiringtheassistanceofacandle.Nordidthestrikingoftheclocks,hourafterhour,appeartoinspirehimwithanysenseofdrowsinessoranynaturaldesiretogotorest,butrathertoincreasehiswakefulness,whichheshowed,ateverysuchindicationoftheprogressofthenight,byasuppressedcacklinginhisthroat,andamotionofhisshoulders,likeonewholaughsheartilybutthesametimeslylyandbystealth.

           Atlengththedaybroke,andpoorMrsQuilp,shiveringwithcoldofearlymorningandharassedbyfatigueandwantofsleep,wasdiscoveredsittingpatientlyonherchair,raisinghereyesatintervalsinmuteappealtothecompassionandclemencyofherlord,andgentlyremindinghimbyanoccasioncoughthatshewasstillunpardonedandthatherpenancehadbeenoflongduration.Butherdwarfishspousestillsmokedhiscigaranddrankhisrumwithoutheedingher;anditwasnotuntilthesunhadsometimerisen,andtheactivityandnoiseofcitydaywererifeinthestreet,thathedeignedtorecognizeherpresencebyanywordorsign.Hemightnothavedonesoeventhen,butforcertainimpatienttappingatthedoorheseemedtodenotethatsomeprettyhardknuckleswereactivelyengagedupontheotherside.
