Sleephungupontheeyelidsofthechildsolong,that,whensheawoke,MrsJarleywasalreadydecoratedwithherlargebonnet,andactivelyengagedinpreparingbreakfast.ShereceivedNell’sapologyforbeingsolatewithperfectgoodhumour,andsaidthatsheshouldnothaverousedherifshehadsleptonuntilnoon.
‘Becauseitdoesyougood,’saidtheladyofthecaravan,‘whenyou’retired,tosleepaslongaseveryoucan,andgetthefatiguequiteoff;andthat’sanotherblessingofyourtimeoflife—youcansleepsoverysound.’
‘Haveyouhadabadnight,ma’am?’askedNell.
‘Iseldomhaveanythingelse,child,’repliedMrsJarley,withtheairofamartyr.‘IsometimeswonderhowIbearit.’
Rememberingthesnoreswhichhadproceededfromthatcleftinthecaravaninwhichtheproprietressofthewax-workpassedthenight,Nellratherthoughtshemusthavebeendreamingoflyingawake.However,sheexpressedherselfverysorrytohearsuchadismalaccountofherstateofhealth,andshortlyafterwardssatdownwithhergrandfatherandMrsJarleytobreakfast.Themealfinished,Nellassistedtowashthecupsandsaucers,andputthemintheirproperplaces,andthesehouseholddutiesperformed,MrsJarleyarrayedherselfinanexceedinglybrightshawlforthepurposeofmakingaprogressthroughthestreetsofthetown.
‘Thewanwillcomeontobringtheboxes,’saidMrsJarley,andyouhadbettercomeinit,child.
