           Dayafterdayashebenthisstepshomeward,returningfromsomenewefforttoprocureemployment,Kitraisedhiseyestothewindowofthelittleroomhehadsomuchcommendedtothechild,andhopedtoseesomeindicationofherpresence.Hisownearnestwish,coupledwiththeassurancehehadreceivedfromQuilp,filledhimwiththebeliefthatshewouldyetarrivetoclaimthehumbleshelterhehadoffered,andfromthedeathofeachday’shopeanotherhopesprunguptoliveto-morrow.

           ‘Ithinktheymustcertainlycometo-morrow,ehmother?’saidKit,layingasidehishatwithawearyairandsighingashespoke.‘Theyhavebeengoneaweek.Theysurelycouldn’tstopawaymorethanaweek,couldtheynow?’

           Themothershookherhead,andremindedhimhowoftenhehadbeendisappointedalready.

           ‘Quitelongenough,Kit,longerthanenough,buttheymaynotcomebackforallthat.’

           Kitwasforamomentdisposedtobevexedbythiscontradiction,andnotthelesssofromhavinganticipateditinhisownmindandknowinghowjustitwas.Buttheimpulsewasonlymomentary,andthevexedlookbecameakindonebeforeithadcrossedtheroom.

           ‘Thenwhatdoyouthink,mother,hasbecomeof‘em?Youdon’tthinkthey’vegonetosea,anyhow?’
