           ‘Weshallbeveryslowto-day,dear,’shesaid,astheytoiledpainfullythroughthestreets;‘myfeetaresore,andIhavepainsinallmylimbsfromthewetofyesterday.Isawthathelookedatusandthoughtofthat,whenhesaidhowlongweshouldbeupontheroad.’

           ‘Itwasadrearywayhetoldusof,’returnedhergrandfather,piteously.‘Istherenootherroad?Willyounotletmegosomeotherwaythanthis?’

           ‘Placesliebeyondthese,’saidthechild,firmly,‘wherewemayliveinpeace,andbetemptedtodonoharm.Wewilltaketheroadthatpromisestohavethatend,andwewouldnotturnoutofit,ifitwereahundredtimesworsethanourfearsleadustoexpect.Wewouldnot,dear,wouldwe?’

           ‘No,’repliedtheoldman,waveringinhisvoice,nolessthaninhismanner.‘No.Letusgoon.Iamready.Iamquiteready,Nell.’

           Thechildwalkedwithmoredifficultythanshehadledhercompaniontoexpect,forthepainsthatrackedherjointswereofnocommonseverity,andeveryexertionincreasedthem.Buttheywrungfromhernocomplaint,orlookofsuffering;and,thoughthetwotravellersproceededveryslowly,theydidproceed.Clearingthetownincourseoftime,theybegantofeelthattheywerefairlyontheirway.
