           Alongsuburbofredbrickhousessomewithpatchesofgarden-ground,wherecoal-dustandfactorysmokedarkenedtheshrinkingleaves,andcoarserankflowers,andwherethestrugglingvegetationsickenedandsankunderthehotbreathofkilnandfurnace,makingthembyitspresenceseemyetmoreblightingandunwholesomethaninthetownitselfalong,flat,stragglingsuburbpassed,theycame,byslowdegrees,uponacheerlessregion,wherenotabladeofgrasswasseentogrow,wherenotabudputforthitspromiseinthespring,wherenothinggreencouldlivebutonthesurfaceofthestagnantpools,whichhereandtherelayidlyswelteringbytheblackroad-side.

           Advancingmoreandmoreintotheshadowofthismournfulplace,itsdarkdepressinginfluencestoleupontheirspirits,andfilledthemwithadismalgloom.Oneveryside,andfarastheeyecouldseeintotheheavydistance,tallchimneys,crowdingoneachother,andpresentingthatendlessrepetitionofthesamedull,uglyform,whichisthehorrorofoppressivedreams,pouredouttheirplagueofsmoke,obscuredthelight,andmadefoulthemelancholyair.Onmoundsofashesbythewayside,shelteredonlybyafewroughboards,orrottenpent-houseroofs,strangeenginesspunandwrithedliketorturedcreatures;clankingtheirironchains,shriekingintheirrapidwhirlfromtimetotimeasthoughintormentunendurable,andmakingthegroundtremblewiththeiragonies.Dismantledhouseshereandthereappeared,totteringtotheearth,proppedupbyfragmentsofothersthathadfallendown,unroofed,windowless,blackened,desolate,butyetinhabited.
