           ‘Irefer,MrsGeneral,tothat—ha—strongspiritofopposition,or—hum—Imightsay—ha—jealousyinFanny,whichhasoccasionallyrisenagainstthe—ha—senseIentertainof—hum—theclaimsof—ha—theladywithwhomIhavenowthehonourofcommuning.’

           ‘MrDorrit,’returnedMrsGeneral,‘iseverbuttooobliging,everbuttooappreciative.IftherehavebeenmomentswhenIhaveimaginedthatMissDorrithasindeedresentedthefavourableopinionMrDorrithasformedofmyservices,Ihavefound,inthatonlytoohighopinion,myconsolationandrecompense.’

           ‘Opinionofyourservices,madam?’saidMrDorrit.

           ‘Of,’MrsGeneralrepeated,inanelegantlyimpressivemanner,‘myservices.’
