           MrsGeneralsentuphercomplimentsingoodtimenextday,andhopedhehadrestedwellafterthisfatiguingjourney.Hesentdownhiscompliments,andbeggedtoinformMrsGeneralthathehadrestedverywellindeed,andwasinhighcondition.Nevertheless,hedidnotcomeforthfromhisownroomsuntillateintheafternoon;and,althoughhethencausedhimselftobemagnificentlyarrayedforadrivewithMrsGeneralandhisdaughter,hisappearancewasscarcelyuptohisdescriptionofhimself.

           Asthefamilyhadnovisitorsthatday,itsfourmembersdinedalonetogether.HeconductedMrsGeneraltotheseatathisrighthandwithimmenseceremony;andLittleDorritcouldnotbutnoticeasshefollowedwithheruncle,boththathewasagainelaboratelydressed,andthathismannertowardsMrsGeneralwasveryparticular.Theperfectformationofthataccomplishedlady’ssurfacerendereditdifficulttodisplaceanatomofitsgenteelglaze,butLittleDorritthoughtshedescriedaslightthawoftriumphinacornerofherfrostyeye.

           NotwithstandingwhatmaybecalledinthesepagesthePruneyandPrismaticnatureofthefamilybanquet,MrDorritseveraltimesfellasleepwhileitwasinprogress.Hisfitsofdozingwereassuddenastheyhadbeenovernight,andwereasshortandprofound.
