           ‘Hesays,’MrsPlornishtheninterpreted,addressingherfatherandPanckswithmildcondescension,‘thathehasmetabadman,buthehopesthebadmandidn’tseehim—Why,’inquiredMrsPlornish,revertingtotheItalianlanguage,‘whyopebadmannosee?’

           ‘Padrona,dearest,’returnedthelittleforeignerwhomshesoconsideratelyprotected,‘donotask,Ipray.OnceagainIsayitmattersnot.Ihavefearofthisman.Idonotwishtoseehim,Idonotwishtobeknownofhim—neveragain!Enough,mostbeautiful.Leaveit.’

           Thetopicwassodisagreeabletohim,andsoputhisusuallivelinesstotherout,thatMrsPlornishforboretopresshimfurther:theratherastheteahadbeendrawingforsometimeonthehob.Butshewasnotthelesssurprisedandcuriousforaskingnomorequestions;neitherwasMrPancks,whoseexpressivebreathinghadbeenlabouringhardsincetheentranceofthelittleman,likealocomotiveenginewithagreatloadgettingupasteepincline.Maggy,nowbetterdressedthanofyore,thoughstillfaithfultothemonstrouscharacterofhercap,hadbeeninthebackgroundfromthefirstwithopenmouthandeyes,whichstaringandgapingfeatureswerenotdiminishedinbreadthbytheuntimelysuppressionofthesubject.
