Thebaking-dishwasservedupinapenitentialmanneronashrunkenclothatanendofthedining-table,attwoo’clock,whenhedinedwithMrFlintwinch,thenewpartner.MrFlintwinchinformedhimthathismotherhadrecoveredherequanimitynow,andthatheneednotfearheragainalludingtowhathadpassedinthemorning.‘Anddon’tyoulayoffencesatyourfather’sdoor,MrArthur,’addedJeremiah,‘onceforall,don’tdoit!Now,wehavedonewiththesubject.’
MrFlintwinchhadbeenalreadyrearranginganddustinghisownparticularlittleoffice,asiftodohonourtohisaccessiontonewdignity.Heresumedthisoccupationwhenhewasrepletewithbeef,hadsuckedupallthegravyinthebaking-dishwiththeflatofhisknife,andhaddrawnliberallyonabarrelofsmallbeerinthescullery.Thusrefreshed,hetuckeduphisshirt-sleevesandwenttoworkagain;andMrArthur,watchinghimashesetaboutit,plainlysawthathisfather’spicture,orhisfather’sgrave,wouldbeascommunicativewithhimasthisoldman.
