           ‘Itmaybeadefectinmymentalvision,Blandois,’saidhe,‘butmayIdieifIseewhatyouhavetodowiththis.’

           ‘Deathofmylife,’repliedBlandois,‘norIneither,exceptthatIthoughtIwasservingmyfriend.’

           ‘Byputtinganupstart’shireinhispocket?’saidGowan,frowning.‘Doyoumeanthat?Tellyourotherfriendtogethisheadpaintedforthesignofsomepublic-house,andtogetitdonebyasign-painter.WhoamI,andwhoishe?’

           ‘Professore,’returnedtheambassador,‘andwhoisBlandois?’

           Withoutappearingatallinterestedinthelatterquestion,GowanangrilywhistledMrDorritaway.But,nextday,heresumedthesubjectbysayinginhisoff-handmannerandwithaslightinglaugh,‘Well,Blandois,whenshallwegotothisMaecenasofyours?Wejourneymenmusttakejobswhenwecangetthem.Whenshallwegoandlookafterthisjob?’

           ‘Whenyouwill,’saidtheinjuredBlandois,‘asyouplease.WhathaveItodowithit?Whatisittome?’

           ‘Icantellyouwhatitistome,’saidGowan.
