           LittleDorritwouldhavebeengladtomakehervisittoMrsGowan,alone;butasFanny,whohadnotyetrecoveredfromherUncle’sprotest,thoughitwasfour-and-twentyhoursofage,pressinglyofferedhercompany,thetwosisterssteppedtogetherintooneofthegondolasunderMrDorrit’swindow,and,withthecourierinattendance,weretakeninhighstatetoMrsGowan’slodging.Intruth,theirstatewasrathertoohighforthelodging,whichwas,asFannycomplained,‘fearfullyoutoftheway,’andwhichtookthemthroughacomplexityofnarrowstreetsofwater,whichthesameladydisparagedas‘mereditches.’

           Thehouse,onalittledesertisland,lookedasifithadbrokenawayfromsomewhereelse,andhadfloatedbychanceintoitspresentanchorageincompanywithavinealmostasmuchinwantoftrainingasthepoorwretcheswhowerelyingunderitsleaves.Thefeaturesofthesurroundingpicturewere,achurchwithhoardingandscaffoldingaboutit,whichhadbeenundersuppositiousrepairsolongthatthemeansofrepairlookedahundredyearsold,andhadthemselvesfallenintodecay;aquantityofwashedlinen,spreadtodryinthesun;anumberofhousesatoddswithoneanotherandgrotesquelyoutoftheperpendicular,likerottenpre-Adamitecheesescutintofantasticshapesandfullofmites;andafeverishbewildermentofwindows,withtheirlattice-blindsallhangingaskew,andsomethingdraggledanddirtydanglingoutofmostofthem.
