           ‘Ihadanticipatedyoursuggestion,madam,’saidMrDorrit,‘but—ha—wasnotsurethatImight—hum—notencroachon—’

           ‘Onmyprovince,MrDorrit?’saidMrsGeneral,graciously.‘Donotmentionit.’

           ‘Then,withyourleave,madam,’resumedMrDorrit,ringinghislittlebelltosummonhisvalet,‘Iwillsendforheratonce.’

           ‘DoesMrDorritwishmetoremain?’

           ‘Perhaps,ifyouhavenootherengagement,youwouldnotobjectforaminuteortwo—’

           ‘Notatall.’

           So,TinklerthevaletwasinstructedtofindMissAmy’smaid,andtorequestthatsubordinatetoinformMissAmythatMrDorritwishedtoseeherinhisownroom.IndeliveringthischargetoTinkler,MrDorritlookedseverelyathim,andalsokeptajealouseyeuponhimuntilhewentoutatthedoor,mistrustingthathemighthavesomethinginhismindprejudicialtothefamilydignity;thathemighthaveevengotwindofsomeCollegiatejokebeforehecameintotheservice,andmightbederisivelyrevivingitsremembranceatthepresentmoment.IfTinklerhadhappenedtosmile,howeverfaintlyandinnocently,nothingwouldhavepersuadedMrDorrit,tothehourofhisdeath,butthatthiswasthecase.
